– Secret Place Insights –
Dear One, HOLINESS – sometimes when we pray, without an eye on the time, it seems we are graciously drawn into holiness. The very place we are seated almost becomes the holy of holies, and there we experience being at one with God.
Such was the case one Saturday morning. As my mind wandered over the words of creation in Genesis, a beautiful image emerged. I was seated beside one of God’s newly created, wild rivers where crystalline waters sang out, and leaves overhead rustled in full harmony. This filled my being with a sense of God’s Majesty. His Holiness seemed palpable, and with that, the mountainous concerns of this present world vanished like fog in the sun.
Oh, Holiness, the Holiness of God! How glorious is the healing of the soul found in the purity of His fellowship. Immediately the desire to join in the singing overcame me. I took the hymnal down from the shelf in front of me, and opened to page two, ‘Holy, Holy, Holy.’
“Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and Mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!”
“Holy, Holy, Holy! All the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, Which wert and art, and evermore shalt be.”
“Holy, Holy, Holy, Tho’ the darkness hide Thee, Tho’ the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see,
Only Thou are holy; There is none beside Thee Perfect in power, in love, and purity.”
“Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy name, in earth, and sky, and sea:
Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and Mighty! God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity!”
With my eyes on those words I wondered, “Who is the person who penned the words of this morning’s heart?” I found that he was Reginald Heber, an English bishop, born in 1783. He died serving in India as Bishop of Calcutta. And there, that day, in my home, more than 200 years later, I was encouraged by Reginald’s love for God, and his devotion. His life, lived so long ago, reminded me that what matters in this life is done with eternity in mind. And what is there in this world which cannot be destroyed? Our prayers. Prayers! Prayers travel from man’s heart to God. He cherishes them, and makes use of them for His eternal purposes. Oh sweet Holiness. Prayer. Purpose. “Thank you, Lord.”
“I give myself unto prayer.” Psalm 109:4
