– Monday Muse –
Dear One, a nurse was checking me out, taking my blood pressure and that sort of thing, when the topic of conversation moved to her having little, to no desire, for socializing. She said that every time she committed to do something with a friend, when the time came she nearly always regretted having agreed to it. But by then, it was too late to back out.
I told her that I was well acquainted with the I will, I don’t want to, and now I am stuck…struggle. Whenever I made plans with a certain friend, I knew that she would soon regret it. Sometimes, during the planning stages, I found myself saying to her, “I know when the time comes that you will be wishing that you had told me no.” Sometimes we chuckled about it. Thankfully, at the end of whatever we had planned she was grateful that she did not back out.
To have a friend, one must be a friend. And every true friendship, at some point, requires sacrifice. At times, it takes both parties being willing to do something they do not want to do for the sake of the other. That is true friendship, but even with the best of efforts, no one friend can encompass all one might hope to find in a friend. For that we must look to Jesus.
On my last birthday, I received the card pictured above. It got me thinking about friendship, and the gift that an enduring friendship can be. I remembered long ago, after the busyness of raising a family, when I realized that I did not have a kindred-spirit friend…for I had not invested the time that such friendship required.
Scripture teaches that we should pray about everything. So I did. In time God opened the friendship floodgates to overflowing. When one hears the word ’friendship’ it is often linked with the word ‘sweet.’ There is sound reason for that, for true friendship is sweet. To have a friend, one must be a friend, and at times, it calls for sacrifice…a small price to pay for such an awesome treasure.
“But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we
have fellowship with one another…” 1 John 1:7
Blessings,
Susanne
