Dear One, in our family room a Bible sits on a table between two recliners. The table easily gets cluttered with the daily crossword, other books, snack dishes, beverages and such. Sometimes when I notice that something is sitting on top of Ron’s Bible. I rush to remove it, sometimes startling him. I cannot help myself. It is God’s Word. It should receive the utmost of respect.
Was that always my attitude? “No.” So what changed? Certainly not God’s Unchanging Word. What changed was my understanding. How did that happen? I began reading it. It was then that I discovered that a Bible which is regularly read never needs dusting.
Some refer to the Bible as a love letter from God, but it is far more than that. What often takes place when a non-believer reads a kind note or love letter? Usually he reads it in private, is touched by it, and he might even save it.
What usually takes place when a believer reads the Bible? He usually reads it in private, is touched by it, and saves it words in his heart.
So what’s the difference? He does not read it alone. At first he may think that he is, but he isn’t. For after he accepts Christ as His Savior and Lord, he will never again read it alone. For the Holy Spirit resides within him. The Holy Spirit is closer to him than he is to himself. As the believer walks through the Bible, the Holy Spirit walks with him and gives him understanding of God’s Word, and understanding which deepens as the believer’s faith grows.
“That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit” John 6:63. The third part of the Trinity is always with the believer allowing him a direct connection with Jesus the Son and God the Father. Yes, the depth of intimacy with God does vary – due to the believers depth of devotion, but God’s love never waivers.
Friday I read again ‘The Parable of the Ten Minas,’ and got a deeper understanding of it. This time I did not read it as a lesson on stewardship, but the responsibility of sharing the faith with others…such a difference. This new understanding seems like a precious jewel.
The Bible is a great read. Truly it is worthy of all respect.
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words
will by no means pass away.” Mark 13:31
Blessings,
Susanne
