Dear One, how many times have we prayed? We do not have any idea of the number, do we? But each time we do, we first direct our prayers to God, right? Then, too often, we quickly get to the heart of our prayer requests. For many of us, this becomes a pattern for prayer, for we are as they say, ‘creatures of habit,’ and they say this because it is true. A morning, not too long ago, I began my prayer time with that pattern.
“Oh, Holy Father,
Jesus the Son,
and the Indwelling Holy Spirit…,”
It was THERE I stopped…as if frozen in place. I did not utter another word. I realized what I had done. I had just, in a disconnected manner, only mouthed the names of our Triune God. After a few moments had passed, I leaned back in my chair, and thought solemnly about whom I had just dispassionately addressed:
God the Father,
Jesus the Savior,
and the Indwelling Holy Spirit.
As thoughts of God formed my morning prayer, my prayer requests were forgotten:
God the Father – I ran to Genesis 1, and sat with God the Father… “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth…” I rested in the reality of God, all He created on this earthen globe, and the fact that He created Man for fellowship.
“By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by
the word of God, so that the things which are seen were
not made of things which are visible” Hebrews 11:3
Jesus the Son – Thoughts of Jesus followed. He willingly lived in human form. He did not walk on this earth clothed in glory, but lived for thirty-three years mired in toil, mission, and finally crucifixion that those who would – could be saved. And it was Jesus, who at that very moment was interceding for me. Unimaginable, but true.
“Therefore He (Jesus) is also able to save to the uttermost
those who come to God through Him, since He always
lives to make intercession for them” Hebrews 7:25
Indwelling Holy Spirit – Lastly, there, in the silence I sat alone, but not alone. For with me sat the Comforter, the Indwelling Holy Spirit. It was He who had that very morning checked my thinking, and prompted, “Whoa, STOP, think about to whom you are addressing and through whom you are addressing. Do not skip to the ‘me, me, me, and the them, them, them,’ without giving honor due God’s Name…God, Jesus, and me, the Spirit.
“And I will pray to the Father, and He will give you another
Helper, that He may abide with you forever– the Spirit of
truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither
sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He
dwells with you and will be in you.” John 14:16 -17
God tells us in His commandments to not put any gods before Him, but the manner in which I began prayer that morning, I had. The subjects of my requests had, momentarily, become my priority. But the True God, through the sacrifice of Jesus, and the Holy Spirit reminded me of my greatest need in the midst of every part of life…connectedness with…Him. I was grateful for the loving reminder, and moved by the sweet fellowship of the morning. A line from an old hymn, Be Thou My Vision, came to mind.
“Be Thou and Thou only the first in my heart,
O high King of heaven, my Treasure Thou Art.”
“Oh yes, Lord, be our Treasure, always.”
Blessings for another week,
Susanne
