Dear One, the questions we ask about ourselves at the beginning of a new year often determine what goals we will set for the upcoming twelve months. Could I be in better physical condition, should I join a gym? Should I lose weight, read more, reorganize, redecorate, learn more about my cell phone, extend more hospitality, join a church, a club, take a class? The list likely has no end.
However, sometimes the ending of one year, leads to a very strong prompting to change things up, as in my husband’s case. Ron, as I write this, is in the Heart Unit at Munson Hospital with a stubborn bout of a-fib. Oh my, has he set new goals! Suddenly the idea of walking with me has become a ‘good’ idea. I look forward to having a walking partner. I have only been inviting Ron to join me since we lived in the city some forty years ago. That confirms my idea that it is never too late. Of course, sometimes it is, but I have no desire to think about that.
Goals can be good, if they are good goals, but what is a good goal? Speaking as one who spent her first 18 years in the Christian faith, not reading her Bible, rarely praying, and certainly never having a quiet time, I finally came upon the best of goals – beginning each day with God. I now tell, all who will listen, that every effort Man makes is best done by first making private time with God a priority. I’ve lived life both ways. I know the difference it makes.
It is written in Deuteronomy 4:39, “Acknowledge and take to heart this day that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other. Keep his decrees and commands…”
The top goal for this New Year’s Day is the same as every other year – to begin each day with God, and receive life-giving, life-changing…goals from God.
“Delight yourself also in the LORD,
And He shall give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4
