Dear One, recently I heard a Texas pastor relay the fact that God designed Man to be an instrument of music in order that Man might worship Him through song. The Book of Psalms is full of the words that harp playing David, once a shepherd boy, and later a king, sang while worshipping God. The pastor went on to say that there are at least three components to a quiet time. He mentioned Scripture reading, prayer and song, in that order. That is the instant when I sat up a bit in my recliner, for he described the exact sequence of how quiet time developed for me. First came the reading, then the infusion of prayer with the Word, and a long time later, a song. The song, given through the Holy Spirit, spoke of the holiness of God, Jesus and the Spirit, Himself. I treasure it. Decades later, I am still singing it. I sang it this morning. It seems to honor God while readying me for the ingestion of His Word.
Lately, there has been a new development…a most enjoyable one. I have added the singing of the hymn Have Thine Own Way, Lord for Ron and I and our entire family. By changing just a few words the song became a prayer for everyone, allowing worship and intercessory prayer to become one.
If you care to pray in this manner, I have printed the additional words below between parenthesis. It you want to hear the tune, you can easily find it on the Internet.
Have Thine Own Way, Lord
Lyrics by Adelaide A. Pollard, 1907
Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Thou are the Potter; I am the clay. (Please be our Potter; make us as clay.)
Mould me and make me After Thy will, (Mould us and make us after Thy will,)
While I am waiting, Yielded and still. (May we be waiting, yielded and still.)
Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Search me and try me, Master, today! (Search us and try us, Master, today!)
Whiter than snow, Lord, Wash me just now, (Whiter than snow, Lord, Wash us just now.)
As in Thy presence Humbly I bow. (May we in Thy presence humbly bow.)
Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Wounded and weary, Help me, I pray! (Wounded and weary, help us, we pray.)
Power all power Surely is Thine! (Power all power, deemed as Thine.)
Touch me and heal me, Saviour divine! (Touch us and heal us, Saviour divine!)
Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Hold o’er my being Absolute sway! (Hold o’er our being absolute sway!)
Fill with Thy Spirit Till all shall see (Fill with Thy Spirit till all shall see)
Christ only, always, Living in me! (The Light within us comes from Thee.)
May the singing of this intercessory prayer add to the richness of your time with the Lord.
“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds
of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and
always keep on praying for all the saints.” Ephesians 6:18 NIV
Blessings,
Susanne
